What Caused the Civil War?

The Civil War was one of the bloodiest battles fought in the history of the US. The mayhem created by the Civil War had long lasting implications in America, which otherwise had been a relatively peaceful country until then.

This war actually began in the year 1861 due to conflicts arising due to numerous factors, but the main reasons were slavery, rights of individual state and the economy of the different states. The conflict originated from eleven of the Southern states that promoted slavery. These states together decided to cut themselves off from the Union and formed a separate Confederate States of America. The Civil War was often regarded as the war of states wherein the Confederate states fought against the rest of the United States, or popularly known as Union. The Union was made up of Free states, or states that did not have or condone slavery.

The reasons for the Southern states to disconnect from the Union were mostly based on bifurcation of governance rights. Since long, there existed an invisible conflict between the federal government and the state governments. The government formed in the then US as per the Articles of Confederation consisted of 13 state governments and a hopeless federal government at the very helm. In order to strengthen the power of the federal government, certain rights were denied to the individual states which, in turn, led to an agitation among these states. Therefore, the Southern states finally decided to move out from the Confederation and be on their own.

The economical inequality between the Northern and the Southern states served as another reason towards the conflict. Northern states were industrially stronger, whereas the Southern states were mostly dependent on a single cotton crop. They had slaves to do all the hard labor in the farms and estates. Basically, without cotton and slavery, the Southern states had nothing else to fall back on. This cultural and economic differentiation led to conflicting opinions that also paved way for the Civil War.

Some of the other causes include the mobilization of movement against slavery and the election of Abraham Lincoln who the Southerners believed was bias towards the Northern states and this frightened them a lot.

All these factors were instrumental in starting the Civil War, which lasted for a period of 4 years. The war commenced in 1861, and came to an end officially in the year 1865 with the surrender of Robert E Lee in Virginia.
